Nazaré and Region

Considered by many to be Portugal’s most typical beach, it charms visitors through its natural beauty.

With a temperate climate, its warm and welcoming people, wonderful light, its fishing traditions, artisanry and craftsmanship, the town of Nazaré became a muse to countless painters and artists, hence its renown around the world.

The wonderful Nazaré bay is protected and sheltered by its majestic headland, on the Summit of which lies Sítio da Nazaré. An integral landmark for the locality, the Sítio must be reached by land on the funicular lift, which provides a memorable view of the horizons around the beach. At the highest point of the Sítio, on the Suberco mirador, one’s sight is lost in some of the most beautiful sea-side landscapes the country has to offer. Here, legend and religious devotion become one through the worship of Our Lady of Nazaré.

Pederneira, an age-old locus for the local fishing community, is the peaceful guardian to memories of past eras. Once the seaport of the Coutos de Alcobaça and an active shipbuilding yard, it nowadays beholds the progress of the beach, laid out at its feet.

The Fishing Harbour and Marina, to the south of the beach also carry the town’s history, here the past and present come together to provide a better future for the Nazaréans.

To stroll through the narrow streets, perpendicular to the sea, where life unfolds to the rhythm of winds and tides, is to discover the essence of these people. Joyful and larger than life, they harbour sadness with an open smile, speak in song and entice you with their manner and dress.

Surrounded by salty scents and the fresh sea air, Nazaré invites its guests to enjoy a nice plate of grilled sardines or a succulent “caldeirada” chowder, among other typical delicacies of the region’s riviera.

Vibrant, active and sports-filled, lively, entirely suited for holidays, leisure or outings and excursions, Nazaré offers all of the delights needed to ensure your return.

Batalha

Set in the centre of the town of Batalha, its monastery is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since the 28th of May 1983. A monument in memory of the battle at Aljubarrota and a regal pantheon, the construction of which began in the late 14th Century under the patronage of Lord João I, the Dominican Monastery of Batalha is Portugal’s most significant Gothic structure. Its vast quarters today constitute an excellent example in the progression of medieval architecture up to the beginning of the 16th Century, ranging from the unprecedented experience of the late Gothic period, to the decorative myriad of the Manueline style. The name and existence of the Batalha township lie in the history of its monastery, Stª Maria da Vitória. And indeed it was not three years after the Battle of Aljubarrota and its date of August 14th, 1385, when the Monastery’s construction began, in accordance with the wish made by Don João I to the Virgin, in which he promised to erect a Monastery in her name, should he defeat the Castilian invasion in that heroic battle, decisive for the consolidation of Portugal’s independence and the emergence of the new Dynasty of Avis.

The Monastery, declared part of UNESCO World Heritage, was in fact not built on the spot where the battle had taken place, a mile and a half from Batalha, in the San Jorge area, but in the small valley of Río Lena. This magnificent structure is the final grand Portuguese Gothic monument, among the first to feature the new Manueline art form and one of the most beautiful Churches in Europe during the late Middle Ages. The ostentatious Gothic style models adapted in this lavish edifice epitomise the culmination of the Gothic style while also being an iconic illustration of 15th Century art. On the Monastery’s adjacent square we find the Equestrian Monument of Constable Lord Nuno Álvares Pereira. The statue, from 1968, commemorates the heroic commander who in the Battle of Aljubarrota defeated an invading army three times the size of his own. Surrounding the monastery lies the township of Batalha, still featuring some old houses, lower in height and fully whitewashed, with another highlight of the town being the Mother Church and tower, a temple with its frontage decorated by a Manueline doorway, while on the inside featuring a vaulted major chapel and two renaissance altarpieces in its side chapels. The chapel of Mercy or Capilla de la Misericordia, toward the back of this Igreja mãe, mother church, is of Barroque-Joanine influence and inspiration, dating from the 18th Century. By the side of National Road nº1, the Bridge of Boutaca was built, (unique in the entire country with its four tax-collection houses, the construction of which began in the second half of the 19th Century, in 1862, during the reign of Don Luís, and includes some neo-Gothic style features).
